The essay presents a synthesis of the development of the field of economic history in Latin America. It highlights the main developments of the last decades and outlines the challenges for the future. It reviews critical issues and debates that have emerged in recent decades. Lastly, the paper suggests a pos- sible research agenda for the coming years.
